Clients with Sjögren syndrome commonly experience dry eyes, a condition known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca. This autoimmune disorder primarily targets the exocrine glands, particularly those responsible for producing moisture, such as the salivary and lacrimal glands. As a result, individuals often suffer from reduced tear production, leading to symptoms of dryness, irritation, and discomfort in the eyes.

The presence of dry eyes is not only a hallmark symptom of Sjögren syndrome but also serves as a diagnostic criterion for the disease. Alongside dry eyes, many patients may experience dry mouth, also referred to as xerostomia, due to similar glandular dysfunction.
